Pista to Gold: Our Ilkal

What you're seeing is not a mill silk. It's an Ilkal from Karnataka, woven for us in Bagalkot.

The Ilkal doesn't follow the usual rules  the body and the majestic pallu are intricately intertwined using Tope Teni, a knotting method spoken only on Ilkal looms. The border here is Chikki Paras, one of the three classic Ilkal borders (Gomi, Paraspet, Gaadi), and the pallu is built to hold structure  which is why it sits so clean as a lehenga.

We chose a natural gold dip-dye over the traditional red, keeping the weave intact but letting the color travel. The craft is GI-protected and centuries old, but it's alive — over 20,000 weavers still work in the region today.
