Some things cannot be printed. They can only be woven.

The Gudda Folk Ilkal is handwoven on pit-looms in Bagalkot, North Karnataka, by our rural artisan family  and every motif you see on this lehenga is pure handwork. The elephants, the dolls, the temple borders scattered across the deep brown checkered body  each one is woven directly into the fabric, thread by thread, on the loom. Not printed. Not embroidered. Woven.

The lehenga is finished with hand-embroidered borders in tonal gold thread work, adding a layer of quiet grandeur to the woven body — a meeting of two crafts, the loom and the needle, each at its finest. The hem border is further anchored by a handloom silk border in deep red and gold zari, woven as a structural frame for the lehenga's silhouette. These borders are not decorative afterthoughts — they are as considered and craft-intensive as the body itself.

The pallu is the authentic Topi Teni Seragu — the most distinctive hallmark of Ilkal weaving. In this centuries-old technique, the body warp and the pure silk pallu warp are prepared entirely separately. The pure silk pallu is then attached to the body warp by a sequence of interlocked loops, a painstaking joining method known as Tope Teni, used exclusively in Ilkal. The result is that unmistakable transition — the body shifting into a rich red and silver zari pallu — that is the signature of a true Ilkal weave.
